21:31 RFI.fr Underperforming Egypt and Senegal look to Salah and Mane for goals

Salah and Mane netted once each in three group matches while receiving close attention and some rough treatment from opponents aware of their scoring potential. Record seven-time champions Egypt face the Ivory Coast in the highlight of an eight-match schedule spanning four days from Sunday having managed only solitary-goal wins over Guinea-Bissau and Sudan. An Ivory Coast side including Sebastien Haller from Ajax and Nicolas Pepe from Arsenal were among the most impressive qualifiers from the six groups and eliminated holders Algeria with a 3-1 triumph. Senegal face dogged Cape Verde, whose forward Garry Rodrigues scored one the best of the 68 goals in the first round with an exquisite back-heel past Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana. Here, AFP Sport looks ahead to the round of 16 with Gabon, Nigeria, Gambia, Cameroon, Senegal, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Mali the possible winners. CAIRO - President Moon Jae-in and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a summit, Thursday (local time), and exchanged their views on future-oriented and sustainable bilateral cooperation. The summit drew keen attention on whether the two countries would reach a deal on Korea's exports of K-9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers to Egypt. Although there was no announcement of a deal, Moon kept a positive note on K-9 exports, citing the two countries' recognition of the benefits of the pact. Moon arrived in Cairo a day earlier, marking the first Korean presidential visit to Egypt in 16 years. The official visit was scheduled in March last year, but had been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The two countries formed a comprehensive cooperative partnership when the Egyptian president visited Korea in 2016.

Nigeria finished Group D with a third successive win as they beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0, leaving runners-up Egypt to face the winners of Group E in the next round, and a potential clash with the Ivorians. Mohamed Abdelmonem's header at a corner 10 minutes before half-time in Yaounde sent the Pharaohs through and eliminated Sudan, and also saw Ivory Coast, Mali, Gambia, Malawi and Cape Verde qualify without kicking a ball. "I think Egypt deserved to win this game without any doubt given the opportunities we created and the football we played," said Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz. "Our sin was not to score the second goal. If you score the second goal the game is finished. I will say it very clear, if I'll be able to win all the games 1-0 till the end I will be happy." Nigeria finished Group D with a third successive win as they beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0, leaving Egypt to face the winners of Group E in the next round, and a potential clash with Ivory Coast in Douala. Mohamed Abdelmonem headed home the winner at a corner 10 minutes before half-time in Yaounde to send the Pharaohs through and eliminate Sudan. Egypt's victory guaranteed Cape Verde and Malawi will qualify as two of the four best third-placed sides. It is the first time Malawi have reached the knockout rounds of the tournament. Three-time former winners Nigeria continued their fine start to the competition by sweeping aside Guinea-Bissau courtesy of second-half goals from Umar Sadiq and captain William Troost-Ekong. The Super Eagles will stay in Garoua to play a third-placed team in the last 16 on Sunday. Cape Verde will take on Sadio Mane's Senegal in Bafoussam on January 25, while Morocco await Malawi on the same day in Yaounde.

The Pharaohs take on Sudan in Yaounde on Wednesday knowing a draw will be enough to send them through to the last 16, where they would face the winners of Group E, and a possible showdown with Ivory Coast. Egypt lost 1-0 to Nigeria in their opening match in Garoua but bounced back to beat Guinea-Bissau by the same scoreline thanks to a goal from star man Mohamed Salah. Queiroz has come under fire for his tactics, with Egypt yet to hit their stride and demonstrate they are capable of ending a 12-year wait for another continental crown. "We're living in a different world (with Covid-19), a different society, a different football," Queiroz told a news conference. "The only thing that didn't change is criticisms for ourselves (coaches)." "The coach can't make a magic situation," he added. "We're doing our best and people on TV or in the media criticise. Salah's first-time finish at the back post in the 69th minute in Garoua got his and Egypt's campaign in Cameroon up and running after they had lost 1-0 to Nigeria in their opening Group D game. However, Guinea-Bissau were left fuming after a stunning 82nd-minute strike by Mama Balde was ruled out following a VAR review. Carlos Queiroz's Egypt, who also hit the woodwork three times, now need only draw their last group game against neighbours Sudan in Yaounde on Wednesday to guarantee safe passage to the last 16. "It was a really tough game and we were a little bit lucky with the foul," Salah admitted to broadcasters. "We have to win our next game now to make sure we qualify and we will do our best to go as far as we can in the tournament." Salah, who had not scored in any of his previous six appearances for Egypt this season, struck the post with just 84 seconds played and Mostafa Mohamed hit the same upright later in the first half. 22:21 RFI.fr Israeli police and Bedouin clash in tree-planting protests

Protesters have held a series of demonstrations in recent days over the environmental scheme in southern Israel's arid desert region, posing a thorny challenge for the fragile coalition government. Bedouin, who are part of Israel's 20 percent Arab minority, have long opposed tree-planting initiatives in the Negev, blasting them as a de facto government land grab in areas they call home. "Police dispersed the demonstrators who blocked a road in the Negev and threw stones at the police," the security forces said in a statement. Thirteen people were arrested in the events, the statement added. An AFP photographer was lightly injured during the clashes. The latest unrest in the decades-long dispute has attracted fresh attention given the make-up of Israel's coalition government, led by right-wing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Bennett's government counts on the backing from the leader of the Islamist Raam party, Mansour Abbas, whose core political support comes from Bedouin in the Negev.

The brief mobile phone video of Aya Youssef, a 30-year-old primary school teacher, shows her wearing a headscarf, trousers and a long-sleeved top as she dances alongside colleagues, smiling as she enjoys a river cruise on the Nile. But the video, which has been shared widely on social media since it was posted earlier this month, has split opinion. Some critics accuse her of breaching the conservative values of a largely Muslim society -- while others stand firmly with her in solidarity. In recent years, Egypt has witnessed several cases in which women have been subjected to defamation campaigns on social media, stirring angry demands for those responsible to be held to account. It comes as rights groups warn of a broadening crackdown on freedom in the increasingly conservative North African nation ever since President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took office in 2014. Youssef, in a recent interview with a private TV channel, said she had been "happy" on the trip and that her moves were
